2½ millennia of forest and forestry histories around the Middle Rhine Valley

Picture Presentation: Dr. Jürgen Gauer
Music: Hunting Horn Players

Forests are a multifaceted and shaping element of our landscape, based on location and climate. However, they have also remained a central resource for supplying the population up to the modern age – for material goods and as an energy carrier. The uses are diverse and often push the limits of the forest's capacity and sometimes even exceed them. Moreover, forests compete with agricultural land. Quickly, competition for use leads to conflict and thus to politics. Therefore, the social conditions of the respective time and their understanding of nature are also reflected in the forest. It's about ownership – who owns which forest – about usage regulations and oversight of the rules. Customary laws arise – forestry regulations – forest laws. Initially, forestry and forest rights are regulated. With population growth and the onset of industrialization, the uses become increasingly intensive. As a result, measures to preserve and restore the forest become ever more significant – obligations are imposed on users. Over time, new native tree species from higher altitudes, such as spruce or later Douglas fir from the new world, are introduced. In essence, we can state that our forests have been cultural forests for centuries.
