“On Wonderful Books and Their Preservation” Visit to the Restoration Workshop
The Arnstein Manuscript Days 2025 begin with an excursion to the Benedictine Abbey Eibingen.
The restoration workshop for ecclesiastical archival materials was established on behalf of the German diocesan archives and inaugurated on November 8, 1974. The workshop is primarily occupied with the restoration work of the individual dioceses of Germany, focusing solely on the ecclesiastical sector.
The archival materials usually exhibit the same “ailments”: dirt, mechanical damage such as cracks, water damage, infestation of microorganisms (mold, bacteria), degradation of the sheet substance, ink and pigment erosion, whereby the ink or color can damage the sheet to the point of brittleness and the loss of lettering. Additionally, the binding of the sheets into the book block and the covers are often damaged.
Following the excursion, a cheerful gathering at the monastery café is planned before returning home! Thus, it will be an exciting kick-off for the multi-day lecture series “On Wonderful Books.”
Early registration is recommended, as spaces are limited!
