An exciting lecture about the situation at the Moselle around 356 A.D.

Lecture by Dr. Ulrich Brand (Association for History, Monument and Landscape Conservation Bad Ems, Friends of the Limes Castle Pohl)

About 100 years after the fall of the Limes in the Westerwald and Taunus and nearly 20 years after the death of the great Emperor Constantine, there is a major attack by the Germans on the territory west of the Rhine. Cologne has fallen, Koblenz is threatened, and the Roman soldier Marcus Junius Maximus, a winemaker's son from the Middle Moselle, returns home to the peaceful Moselle after a serious injury. His parents recently died of a plague brought in from the east, and he now wants to win his friend Galerius for the management of his vineyard, as he will soon be called back to the military. They row to the new large pressing facility in Porto Pigonto (Piesport) to later plan similar projects, but after the visit is complete, high columns of smoke south of the Moselle announce a German invasion that forces them to return as quickly as possible, for the enemy will soon threaten their vineyard as well. A Roman fast boat takes them home from the fortress of Noviomagus (Neumagen), where the estate is immediately transformed into a fortress. However, the several hundred strong German horde strikes at a luxury villa a bit further up the Moselle, and they must rush there to provide support. In doing so, the strategically experienced Marcus contributes significantly to the Roman victory. In the subsequent visit to Trier, Marcus is promoted to Tribune for his merits, but we primarily explore "Rome of the North," which Galerius did not know and which Marcus now introduces to him.

The texts are from the first volume of the Marcus Trilogy by Michael Kuhn.
