Lecture by Dr. Ulrich Brand: "The History of the Lahn as a Shipping Route"

For centuries, ships have sailed on the Lahn. For a long time, they transported goods, limestone, ore, and mineral water. Several times the shipping route was expanded with weirs and locks. From the Middle Ages until the 19th century, territorial fragmentation had consequences for navigation.

The presentation also covers the development during the time of the Duchy of Nassau and after 1866, when the railway became a competitor to shipping, as well as the further development during Prussian times and afterwards, when the Lahn became a federal waterway from Gießen to Lahnstein.

At the end, we will show a 10-minute film made by the mariner Josef Staudt from Nievern in 1969 of a journey with the cargo ship from Nievern to Altendiez and back to Lahnstein.
