Günter Leifheit Memorial Concert
The Emser Sinfonietta was founded in 2023 by Herman Wagener. The South African native and trained orchestra and choir conductor has lived in Bad Ems with his family since 2009. From the very beginning, Wagener was fascinated by the rich musical heritage of his chosen home, where renowned composers such as Offenbach, Liszt, Weber, and Wagner had lived and composed. However, he noticed that there was no independent orchestra in Bad Ems and began to develop initial ideas to change this. The final impetus for the establishment of an orchestra came with Bad Ems' recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site "Great Spa Towns of Europe" in July 2021.
The founding concert of the Emser Sinfonietta took place on November 5, 2023, in the Marmorsaal, and was, according to audience and press reports, a resounding success. Since then, the Emser Sinfonietta has become a name in the region and has already been requested for further concerts. Several events are planned for the year 2025, including symphony concerts, opera galas, and concert tours.
The Emser Sinfonietta consists of professional musicians as well as aspiring professionals and talented amateurs from the region. Wagener's goal with the Emser Sinfonietta is to preserve the rich musical heritage of Bad Ems while simultaneously developing it further through innovative programs.
Moreover, Wagener aims to establish exchanges with other European spa towns also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Great Spa Towns of Europe." This exchange is to be realized in the form of concert tours, providing the Emser Sinfonietta the opportunity to present its skills beyond the borders of Bad Ems while also establishing cultural connections with other historical spa towns.
