Under the motto "Emperor Hadrian – the traveling master builder of the Empire," Dr. phil Wolfgang Moschek from TU Darmstadt will give a talk.
No Roman emperor traveled his empire as intensively as Hadrian. Over more than two decades of his reign, he personally inspected borders, cities, and military camps – from the Hadrian's Wall in Britain named after him to the legion camps on the Rhine and Danube. These travels were not an imperial pleasure, but a political program: They shaped the image of the Limes as a boundary.
Emperor Hadrian left a footprint in history as a builder. In addition to military fortifications, he also had the Pantheon in Rome and numerous grand buildings in provincial cities constructed. Furthermore, the Castel Sant'Angelo was commissioned in his name. It was originally intended as a mausoleum and only later became a fortress for the popes.
