MehWerk® - Sheep Farming and More
Our sheep graze in the Nassau Nature Park in the rugged low mountain landscape of the Taunus, on extensive grassland, orchards, and nature conservation areas. The herd consists of Coburg Fox sheep, an old robust and resilient breed of land sheep. Particularly characteristic of the Coburg Fox sheep is the slightly reddish shimmering fleece, the "golden fleece".
These animals are listed in the red list by the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Breeds (GEH); through our breeding efforts, we contribute to the preservation of this endangered breed. A large part of our animals is recorded in the breeding book of the State Association of Rhineland-Palatinate.
We practice both herding and paddock management with Border Collies.
We produce all the basic feed (hay, haylage, silage) for the sheep farm ourselves.
The high quality of the harvested products is achievable through our own mechanization, allowing us to adapt the harvesting time to weather conditions and thereby also realize a particularly gentle harvest.
During the stall time (lambing season), we feed organic grain as well as our own basic feed.
Our sheep herds are kept in open-air conditions year-round, in sun and rain, as far as weather conditions permit; here we consciously refrain from supplementing with concentrated feed, making the sheep more robust and resilient. They develop sufficient natural defenses and can live in harmony with the rhythm of the seasons.
A symbiosis between nature conservation and pasture livestock farming emerges...
Sheep Farm MäähWerk is an officially recognized partner of nature conservation in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Sheep, in particular, contribute to nature conservation through species-appropriate grazing. They act as "seed taxis" for various plant species and are also relevant for many bird and insect species. Through their "golden hoof," the sheep solidify the soil, which strengthens the grass sward and reduces the risk of soil erosion from wind and rain. Unlike grazing with cattle, sheep do not cause trampling damage due to their lighter weight, making them particularly well-suited for landscape maintenance.
Through the sustainable use of sheep for landscape maintenance, we ensure the preservation of extensive areas and contribute to biodiversity through grazing. We are your partner for the management and preservation of green spaces, nature conservation areas, wetlands, and orchards, as well as for grazing projects on open fields/photovoltaic areas.
Since January 1, 2024, we are a certified agricultural operation with organic farming practices in accordance with the EU Organic Regulation. This allows us to market our products as organic goods. Our operation produces 100% of the basic feed (hay, haylage, silage) ourselves. During the stall time (lambing season), our mother sheep are additionally fed organic grain alongside the high-quality basic feed to ensure optimal care for the animals. We source the organic grain from regional organic farmers.
