Jewish Neighbors – Let’s Speak Frankly!
Remembrance of November 9: History and Stories by and with Jürgen Poth
In solemn memory of the November pogroms of the Nazi regime against the German Jews in 1938, November 9 is also a day in Germany to remember the victims of National Socialism – in addition to the official national Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp (1945).
Told history and sung stories will transport you into a world that is not (only) about the Shoah and annihilation, but describes the coexistence and togetherness of Jews and Christians. This was - and still is - not always without tension or exclusion. Yet it was a time that enriched our culture, fostering exchange, hope, and unquestioned certainties. Just neighborhood!
Along a timeline, we will musically move from the present to the past of Jewish life in Germany. Yiddish songs translated into High German will give us a behind-the-scenes view. Key aspects will highlight the particularities and the Jewish history of the respective venues, which will be intertwined with the introduction of a song. In this, the common everyday life will not be overlooked, whose honest, emotional depiction is oriented around the chronicles of Jewish families. Music and biographies thus merge into emotional messages that only eyewitnesses can convey. Current events will not be avoided but invite us to speak frankly!
