Sometimes the most impressive motifs are very close by. Filmmakers Ute and Jakob Breidenbach from Schalkenbach near Bad Neuenahr demonstrate in their film presentation how exciting and diverse home can be. With a trained eye and a great sense for special moments, they take their audience on a visual journey of discovery through the different regions.
A highlight is the ascent to the roof of Cologne Cathedral. From a lofty perspective, a previously hidden world opens up – impressively captured and complemented by exciting information about the history and architecture of the famous cathedral.
Touching history is offered by the “Old Cemetery” in Bonn. Here lie numerous significant figures of the 19th century, including Beethoven's mother, the musician couple Clara and Robert Schumann, as well as philosophers Schlegel and Arndt. The site tells of the early University of Bonn and the people who shaped the intellectual life of their time.
A poetic counterpoint is the cinematic annual cycle of an apple tree in the district of Dedenbach in the Brohl Valley – a quiet nature portrait about change and permanence.
It becomes dramatic at Rodder Maar: A storm, captured up close by the camera, unfolds a powerful visual language in conjunction with the overture to Rossini's William Tell. Here, the saying goes: pictures speak louder than words.
The conclusion is the impressive portrait “He Has Remained.” After the dissolution of the Cistercian convent in Himmerod Monastery, Father Stefan continues to live in this place – alone, but not abandoned. As a monk, priest, poet, and development worker, he embodies a life full of depth and conviction. His decision to preserve the monastery as home is touching and thought-provoking.
Jakob Breidenbach from Schalkenbach has been an enthusiastic photographer since the age of 16. Since the year 2000, he expanded his passion to filmmaking, specifically travel films, which have already earned him numerous awards in amateur filmmaking. He is supported by his wife Ute, who also, alongside photography, assists her husband in the film shoots.
