Elwetritsche – Fantastic Beasts in Southern Germany

Image Presentation: Michael Landgraf
Music: mülleRReuter

Every landscape worth its salt has its corresponding mythical creature: Famous, for instance, is the Bavarian Wolpertinger. Also in the vineyards of Obernhof, one can occasionally see the Ommel bustling around on moonlit nights, according to Lahn vintner Helge Ehmann. On this evening, the Elwetritsche will be introduced. These are fantastic creatures known in many parts of Southern Germany, especially in the South Palatinate. They have been frequently depicted in art, particularly by the renowned artist Gernot Rumpf, who died in 2025. He became famous especially for his bronze fountains, found in many German cities and municipalities. One of the most original is probably the Elwetritsche fountain in Neustadt/Weinstraße.

Michael Landgraf, writer and Secretary General of PEN Germany, lives in Neustadt, the hotspot of Elwetritsche. He will introduce Tritschology and report on its history, classifications, way of life, as well as their global dissemination. He is the author of two books about the Elwetritsche and has frequently accompanied SWR television in search of these mythical beings.

The duo mülleRReuter will bring these fantastic mythical creatures to life with sound.
