The Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral is a stage for contemporary art, a space for encounter, a place of vision. Since 1995, we have been promoting visual artists from around the world through annually awarded scholarships.

This year, among others, the artist and scientist Asel Kadyrkhanova from Kazakhstan is living and working in the Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral.

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 11 AM, we have the honor of projecting her hand-drawn animated film “All the Dreams We Dream,” 2020, in the salon of Schloss Balmoral.

Admission is free.

The hand-drawn animated film has so far only been shown publicly once in Germany – at a festival in Wiesbaden. It draws on the artist's research on the famine in Kazakhstan during the 1930s. In touching drawings and the simple beauty of the black-and-white aesthetic, Asel Kadyrkhanova weaves the memoirs of poet Gafu Kairbekov into a dreamlike narrative. In a poetic way, she raises questions that are particularly significant and legitimate on the Day of Monuments: How do we remember the past, the works of nature and culture, but also destruction? The film is a contribution from the Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral to look at monuments and world heritage in Bad Ems from various perspectives. The projection of “All the Dreams We Dream" offers the special opportunity to get to know the working methods and artistic concerns of an internationally esteemed artist in the Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral and to engage in direct conversation with Asel Kadyrkhanova.
