Cycling on historical traces
The Orange Cycle Route leads through regions and towns that have been closely associated with the Princely House of Orange-Nassau for centuries. On this varied route, you will experience an exciting mix of nature, culture and history. The route winds along idyllic rivers, through gently rolling landscapes and into charming historic town centers such as Nassau, Diez, Braunfels and Dillenburg. Those looking for peace and quiet will find it on the banks of the Lahn and Dill - and those who love culture will always find it along the way.
The route starts in Nassau. Surrounded by the Nassau Nature Park and nestled between the Taunus and Westerwald, the town offers ideal conditions for an atmospheric start. From there, the route continues along the river to Diez an der Lahn, where the route is pleasant and easy to cycle. The next stage leads to Braunfels - a town characterized by its fairytale castle. Situated on a basalt hill, the imposing building with its towers and battlements towers above the landscape, visible from afar.
From Braunfels, you cycle on to the traditional half-timbered town of Dillenburg. This is the birthplace of the Dutch royal family: William of Orange was born at Dillenburg Castle and his life and work still shape the region today.
The entire route is well developed and runs mainly on long-distance cycle paths in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. There is a slight incline to contend with at the start. Away from through-town roads, you are mostly separated from road traffic and can enjoy the tour to the full.
