Exposed Limes trench shows the course of the former border
150, 1,750 and 10,000 years ago: 150 metres to the west of the Limes hiking trail lies a damaged slope pile site (Köhlerplatte). Until around 1850 charcoal was produced here for smelting ore. The Limes Graben is open to the public. Underneath the raw humus layer lies a layer of volcanic ash, which was blown here by the volcanoes of the Eifel about 10,000 years ago.
