Lecture and information about the Bad Ems healing springs
The Association for History, Monument and Landscape Preservation e.V. Bad Ems was able to recruit the speakers Julia Palotas, Annegret Werner-Scholz, Achim Deusner, and Hans-Jürgen Sarholz on the topic of mineral springs in Bad Ems.
Bad Ems, its history and its cityscape are shaped by the use of mineral springs over seven centuries. Without them, there would be no spa town and the current World Heritage “Great Spa Towns of Europe”.
This will be explained by World Heritage Coordinator Julia Palotas in her introduction. Using historical images and plans, Hans-Jürgen Sarholz will illustrate the use of the springs from the medieval wild bath to the emergence of the drinking cure and the spa applications of modern times in the 20th century. This development is still traceable in the cityscape and building fabric today.
This includes bathhouses, the spring tower, drilling tower, and a more than 300-year-old fountain hall in the spa house, the current Hotel Häcker. Annegret Werner-Scholz, as a contemporary witness, will report on the last significant period of the “classical” cure in the late 20th century, when the healing water was still the basis for spa treatments.
The current significance of the mineral springs, protection and management by Staatsbad Bad Ems GmbH and perspectives for the future will be presented by Managing Director Achim Deusner. This will also address the recently completed renovation of the spring tower.
