Archery Bow Building Workshop with Dr. Junkmanns

On the weekend of 8.5. to 9.5.2027 (Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), you will build a historical bow from a single piece of wood. You will also make suitable wooden arrows with self-nocks and natural fletching. You will twist your traditional Flemish twisted bowstring, and at the end, you will tune your new bow.

You have a choice: you can decide between nine historical bow types. Special requests can also be accommodated. This way, you can get your personal desired bow. Bow blanks are individually pre-made according to your body measurements, draw length, and the desired bow strength for you. Therefore, it is essential that you contact Dr. Junkmanns promptly via email after receiving the automatic reservation confirmation: info(at)pfeil-bogen.de

Your bow will be made from a carefully selected piece of hard and tough hickory wood. Hickory was the preferred bow wood of the woodland Indians of North America. After trials with native woods such as ash or maple, hickory wood has proven to be the best material for bow-making courses. This ensures that you will build a high-quality bow!

You will work with various traditional tools. For rough work, we use rasps. For fine work, draw knives are employed. The most important step in building a bow is the careful adjusting of the bow limbs, which is also known as "tillering." When the bow bends (almost) perfectly evenly, it will be smoothed. The finish is done with sandpaper. Finally, you can treat your bow with wax.

For your new bow, you will of course need a traditional bowstring with Flemish twisted nocks. At the lower end, the traditional string maker's knot is used. You will also make suitable wooden arrows with fletching made from natural feathers for your bow. At the end of the bow-making course, you will have the opportunity to tune your new bow and arrows under expert guidance. In addition, you will learn the basics of traditional archery.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 10, as intensive support and advice are required when building a bow.
