Jaleh Tavassoli
In her paintings on clothing, the artist Jaleh Tavassoli addresses a special connection and commonality for her: that between resilient women and resilient plants.
In the words of the artist:
“Iranian women and their courage and resilience are my greatest source of inspiration. Like plants that grow under difficult conditions and in hostile environments, they move on, grow, break through the structures imposed upon them, blossom, and change the world. I have transferred these forms onto garments made of natural fibers because I am convinced that clothing is one of the most effective ways to express our thoughts and beliefs. What we wear can become a statement about who we are and what we believe in. With these garments, I wanted to bring the natural power of women onto the body – a power that, like plants, is organic, unstoppable, beautiful, and ever-growing. The images are not only meant to be looked at but also to be worn, carried, and become part of everyday life.”
About Jaleh Tavassoli
The artist and author comes from Iran. A central theme in her art is the connection between body and mind. She is particularly interested in the female body in a misogynistic system that is hostile to life itself. Jaleh Tavassoli explores how bodies define themselves in a place where love, beauty, joy, and happiness are not tolerated. Her most important inspiration is the transformative connection of suffering, awareness, wisdom, and courage of Iranian women. She considers their development over the past 200 years to resemble the growth of plants in inhospitable environments. Both are seen as organic, dynamic, expanding, and unstoppable. The artist is currently addressing the question of how personal and collective experiences can be transformed into spaces of connectedness that reflect fractal structures found in nature, which consist of female and expansive horizontal values in contrast to hierarchical vertical systems.
Jaleh Tavassoli is an artist in residence in Bad Ems, enabled by the In Solidarity! scholarship, a collaboration this year between the Rheinland-Pfalz Foundation for Culture and the Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral. www.instagram.com/tannaztavassoli
