Hiking in the Footsteps of the Romans
The UNESCO World Heritage Day has been celebrated for 20 years now. Bad Ems is known to be part of two World Heritage sites, the "Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes" and the "Great Spa Towns of Europe." The Limes has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. From the very beginning, the Association for History, Monument and Landscape Conservation (VGDL) has supported its research and communication. In coordination with the Heritage Office, the VGDL offers two free events for UNESCO World Heritage Day:
Under the leadership of Dr. Hans-Jürgen Sarholz, the tour will take us over the Wintersberg. Along the way, we will encounter not only the archaeological monument of the Limes. Other traces of regional history are equally present along the roadside. The topics will also include "small-state politics," old charcoal kiln sites, a vanished mill at Braunebach, and the use of forests in earlier times. The hike lasts about 2.5 hours, covers approximately 5.5 km and 160 meters of elevation on forest paths to the Limes and the watchtower on the Wintersberg.
