The southern ring wall of the town of Nassau runs along Hintergasse. Permission to fortify the town was granted in 1323, the town charter to Nassau by Emperor Charles IV in 1348.

The Hintergasse was initially a narrow, one-sided walled street, along the southern circular wall with small half-timbered houses. The opposite side of the street was once occupied by the 2 m high official wall. The war did not spare this alley.
