Vineyard shelter in dry stone wall construction
The building has adorned the vineyards above Obernhof since May 2023. The Wingertschützenhütte is a dry-stone hut without mortar and was built by many volunteers based on a historical model. With its many gaps and crevices between the stones, the hut also serves as a habitat for wall lizards and other creatures.
In the 19th century, vineyard terraces were created high above Obernhof and the River Lahn. Small vineyard huts were built for protection. One of these vineyard cottages from the 1860s had a very special design: its dry stone wall technique was somewhat reminiscent of the trulli in southern Italy - a building with a domed roof that presumably served as a shelter and observation point for the field guard. The aim was to prevent grape theft.
