Impressive church with golden domes and valuable iconostasis
The Russian Church was consecrated in Bad Ems in honor of the Holy Martyr Empress Alexandra, the wife of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Her feast day is celebrated on April 23 according to the Julian calendar, which corresponds to May 6 in the Gregorian calendar. At the same time, the church particularly commemorates Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna, the wife of Czar Nicholas I. She was born Friederike Luise Charlotte Wilhelmine von Preußen, daughter of King Friedrich Wilhelm III and Queen Louise (née Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz). In her honor, the church was built in 1876 in Bad Ems; it remains a place of worship for all Orthodox Christians in Europe.
Many interesting facts exist in the history of the founding and construction of the church. It is particularly noteworthy that German spa towns were very popular among Russian nobility. This “fashionable treatment at the waters” was described in works of Russian classical literature at the time. The development of the railway network in Russia and Europe contributed to a large number of Russian noble families visiting Germany – alone by the end of the 1880s, more than a thousand came in a single summer.
