Visit to the inventor of the four-stroke engine
Holzhausen an der Haide is the birthplace of a truly "world-shaking" man: Nicolaus-August Otto, inventor of the four-stroke engine. He was born here on 14 June 1832.
Today, the house where he was born houses a museum in which the progress of engine technology can be viewed on originals from the first machine to the latest developments in technology. Here you have the opportunity to see some of the last original Otto engines, of which there are only a few left in the world. On special occasions and for registered groups there is the possibility to visit a gas engine Mod. D from 1890 and an atmospheric gas engine from 1877 in operation! On the wall behind the engine, a 3D enlargement of a photo has been attached showing the old Deutz factory hall where these engines were built. The visitor feels like standing on a platform above the production hall of the old engine.
